Introduction
The history of carpet weaving in India dates back to 1580 A.D. when Emperor Akbar brought some Persian carpet weavers to his palace in Agra. Subsequently, carpet centres were set up at Agra, Delhi and Lahore to train artisans who could produce carpets of Persian style. And now centuries after carpets came to India, the industry is flourishing. The art of carpet weaving has percolated down through generations and Indian craftsmen have been creating the greatest of specimens since then. Hand-knotted woollen carpets speak eloquently of superb workmanship. The designs and colour schemes have their own independent logic and unique magic. Silk carpets, for example, are known for their suppleness and softness. These display fine workmanship and intricate designs. Designs vary from intricate motifs inspired from nature to hunting scenes, birds and animals or thematic designs like historical romances.
